| Resistance: Fall of Man Resistance: Fall of Man, previously known as I-8 (working title), is an upcoming sci-fi-based first-person shooter video game being developed by Insomniac Games, the makers of the popular Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet & Clank series for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2. Exclusively for the Sony PlayStation 3, it is scheduled to be released as a launch title on November 17, 2006 for the worldwide release of the PlayStation 3. Setting
The game is set in Great Britain in 1951, but in an alternate history where a species of unknown origin named the Chimera have overrun Earth. This means that World War II never occurred. The plot revolves around the last ditch effort of the US and Britain to fight the Chimera across a war-ravaged British landscape. Little else is known about the game other than what has been seen in preview footage, namely horrifying creatures possessing technologically advanced weapons, zombie-like beings and giant spider-like beasts.
The humans seem to be relying on more conventional weapons, including a pump-action shotgun, an automatic rifle that resembles an AK-47 with a scope attached, and a rifle with an underslung grenade launcher which appears to be a bizarre hybrid of the M1 Garand and modern assault rifles such as the FN SCAR and H&K G36. However, there will be some futuristic weapons such as the Bullseye, which lets you tag an enemy so that all shots will home in on it. Also seen in videos and screenshots are tiltrotor aircraft similar to a V-22 Osprey. It is likely that the game will feature much of this human technology which normally would seem anachronistic for the 50s era, yet feasible in the alternative universe setting where mankind would be investing all its resources into developing ways to combat the invaders. Indeed, press reports from E3 2006 talk about even more fanciful weapons such as a grenade type called the Hedgehog, which detonates in mid-air, firing spikes in all directions. Story

Resistance: Fall of Man will be a first-person shooter set in an alternate history. With it, many of it's gameplay features stem from this. Most notible of which is the weapons. Some weapons are based off of real weapons, while some weapons are futuristically altered. Insomniac Games has combined its passion for creating exotic weapons, and vehicles, such as those found in the Ratchet and Clank series with its proprietary development engine, and physics system to create a unique human and Chimeran weaponry.
Each weapon will provide a unique play style and strategy. An example of this is found with the Auger (Chimeran). The primary fire for this weapon is simple rapid fire, but, the bullets bury through walls, opening up a whole new level of strategy. The secondary fire creates a barrier, that is resistant to bullets. Most weapons will provide unique experiences, whether they are a simple shotgun, or the unique Auger.
The game will feature melee attacks. The game will also feature small, realistic jumping.
Resistance: Fall of Man will also feature player controlled vehicles. Although, vehicle types are not yet known. From a recent screenshot courtesy of Playstation Magazine, a large mechanical like spider tank known as the 'Stalker' will be a controllable vehicle.
Resistance: Fall of Man is said to run locked at 30 Frames Per Second, offline and online, no matter what happens in-game. Multiplayer
Resistance: Fall of Man will feature a multiplayer mode for up to 40 players.
Insomniac Games is currently planning to utilize the Playstation 3's online service to it's upmost ability, by incorporating a full-featured smart matchmaking and ranking system, allowing for a new player to easily enjoy the game online, instead of being harassed and beaten by players who bought the game on day one.
The mulitplayer for Resistance is said to be highly customizable for unranked matches, allowing for hosts to set different parameters such as hit points, weapon sets, and much more. While ranked matches may follow a more set design to allow for fair, even play.
Weapon spawning is in Resistance: Fall of Man, but will follow a much more lenient manner. The weapon-spawn pods are circled by a series of lights that count down to the time a weapon will reappear.
There will be several maps, and several game modes to enjoy, including the ever popular Deathmatch.
Insomniac Games have stated that the game may feature downloadable content. |
