ok, so they've shipped 100 million units, but how many of those have
been replacement units for broken, knackered ps2's etc? i'd imagine a
good 30% at least of that figure, going by personal experience.

from working for Game, while a few xbox's and cubes came back faulty,
PS2's were far more commonly faulty.

you could argue that it was proportional to total sales, but the ps2
certainly seemed to have a higher fault rate.

Can't argue with that Chris. I will say, though, that my xbox, with
the dreaded thompson drive, has the shorter life before it showed
problems. Seemed to be as games became more advanced the machines
virtually gave up. I can still run either but they are hit and miss.
San Andreas will kill the ps2 stone dead. Forza seemed to be the push
too far for the xbox.

Do we dare hope these problems will be ironed out for the new systems?

I waited along time to get a PS2 because of all the problems I heard of it. This past summer I finally got the slim one with Parappa 2. It hasn't shown any problems yet.

Why is that always the case! If you remember back to the original Play Station there were loads of problems with that, and Sony actually had to release another version made from different components to slow the return rate!

That was what happened, at least in the UK...mind you we are about 12 weeks behind everywhere else!

The PS2 slim is Sony's attempt to iron out bugs in the PS2.

Were those platinum PS2's just standard PS2's simply in a different colour or what? I've always wondered why they cost so much more!

Meh, thats why i never bother with consoles anymore, i just stick with a pc. If something falls off or goes wrong, just get another one!

The same rule applies if your pc can't play a game!

I mean, who here thinks a console is better than a pc.

I wouldnt say that consoles were on the whole better than computers BUT you say that you just buy a replacement part? That only works fine if you have a ton of cash that you want to burn.

A console is made to play whats around and what will be around in the following 6 months yet a PC usually comes underspec'd - especially if you look at the cheap models that Dell are pumping out at the moment. They have fast processors, plenty of RAM & HDD space but i doubt they would give enjoyable frame rates in BF2.

And what about laptop users? I have an inspiron (another Dell!) and all i can do is change the RAM or HDD, if i am willing to burn a HUGE hole in my pocket. If consoles were a little more versitile they would be even more popular & put PC's out of business...possibly...

Put it better than that!
