Default Metal Gear Solid 2 -- am I stupid?

Hey guys,

I just got myself a used copy of MGS2: Sons of Liberty, and I
love it.

I also downloaded a couple of walkthroughs, and what struck me as odd is
that all the walkthroughs and FAQs start out with a pretty long section
that seems to play on some kind of tanker, but my game starts with what
the FAQ calls the "second part" which takes place on the waste disposal
platform -- struts A-F, shell 1 and 2 and that sort of thing. All the
tanker stuff was in the intro cutscenes.

What's going on here?

Thanks,
robert

I don't know what to tell you. When I recently rented it, it started on
the ship. Is there something at startup that lets you choose which
mission to go to?

WHERE you start depends on how you answered the questions at the beginning.
From memory I think you get to play the Snake part at the beginning if you
said you have played MG before... I THINK...

Could be the other way around, I seem to remember saying "no" because I
hadn't played the first game and started on the tanker.
Its definitely down to how you answer the questions at the beginning though

Yeah, this is the European version and it gives you about five options
(whether or not you played MGS1, multiple or one time, and if you
cleared it or just watched it being cleared, and if you liked the
"action" or not...). After that, it says "Action level selected" and
jumps into the game. Unfortunately, you're left in the dark about what
consequences your choice has and what an "action level" is (the
difficulty level is a seperate issue and is asked later). IMO it doesn't
make sense to play the ship after the platform because that would seem
to be the chronologically wrong order (from what I know of the story so
far, which is very little).

Anyway, if you say that you have cleared the previous game (which I
haven't -- I've never seen it) you get to start on the tanker. I don't
understand why, but that's the way it is.

Seems weird to me.
Why would they do it in the wrong order like that? Seems like they just want to confuse the player?

I belive that the ship part is nothing more than an introduction to the game. If you played the first game you would know that snake is not a terrorist and that he didn't steel the MG plans - Starting with the second part would be stupid.
But if you are newbie and have no idea then it will be all about who are your friends and your foes on the game, thus starting on the platform. After the game is finished you go back to the ship in order to know what really happened there (like some kind of flashback)

I get it, so you go back in time sort of after you have finished the game?
Personally i prefer to know the whole story before i play and not after it.

its a strange but different way of doing things i guess.
