Default interesting PSP questions

Hi folks,

I'm thinking about buying a PSP as a much better alternative
to the iPod, but I have a few questions about what I can
actually do with it. Incidentally I looked for a FAQ list
but only found a limited one created by a magazine.

In list format for easier reading...

1a. can the PSP finally do serious web browsing with
SSL and flash ?

1b. when browsing, how does one enter text?

2. how long does the battery last when the wireless
functionality is being used?

3. can the PSP be stored in its case while you're
listening to music without problems? for instance
is there a key-lock mechanism like you see on
cell phones?

4. does the MP3 player have the usual directories,
playlists etc that you see on most portable devices?

5. is there any app for Windows or for Linux that will
let me easily convert mpeg files and other formats
to the video format used by the PSP?

6. if you own the 4 gig hard drive + battery, what are
you experiences as far as battery power and weight
are concerned, also quality? (it's sold online at lik-sang)

7. is there an external keyboard available yet?

8. GTA for PSP: good? great? the best?

9. Are there any rumors yet of an IP phone
attachment for the PSP?

10. about Sony's screen (scratch) protector: does it
affect image quality significantly?

Thanks!

I own a 4gb memory pack for the psp...check the recent thread regarding
this..i like it and it does the job well. I dunno if you should put yourself
in a position to choose between an ipod and a psp...whilst the psp happens
to have music playback, it dosnt facilitate playlists etc in the way an ipod
can...that being said, you can't play GTA on an ipod

I don't use a screen protector...after the initial " protect the screen at
all costs " paranoia when I first got my psp ( wow..is it almost a year
already??), no matter what you do, your screen will get smudges and
scratches .

I dunno if an external keyboard is available, and the psp utilises a text
entry system that i can't STAND..

Battery life does go down quicker when wifi is used, but i dont use the wifi
option often cos i dont know anyone else with a psp!

As for GTA, i have always thought it was a pretty shitty game to begin
with..I got it anyways for my UK spec psp and if you have ever played the
GTA series, you'll feel at home rightaway.

If music playback and amusic player is important to you, then an ipod is a
much better solution ( porbably cheaper, too...the 4gb hard drive was £150
when i got mine), but the psp is an amazing piece of kit....and although you
didnt mention it, the movie playback is also VERY good

No, large and advanced webpages will not work correctly, nor will flash

1b. when browsing, how does one enter text?
By using the keyboard menu (like sending text messages on your phone)

Quote:
2. how long does the battery last when the wireless

Depends if it's for gaming or browsing, my old battery only lasts 4 hrs and
even less when gaming.

Yes it supports playlists and shows album art if your mp3 files has them

No

8. GTA for PSP: good? great? the best?
It's GTA in your pocket basically, framerate takes some dips, somewhat
different when you havent
got a second analogue control to aim with...
i would say : good

I have both and they're two different beasts. Unless you go for the 4Gb pack
the PSP doesn't store enough songs for a long journey, compare 1Gb card to a
30Gb MP3 player it just doesn't store enough

About a 30th of the amount I'd say.

depends on the player really, but yeah, iRiver's a better brand IMO.

Do either of those play games?

no

i chose an iRiver as well... the H120. very nice player. it has an FM
radio and can record music in mp3 and wav formats so seems better value
than an iPod

Wow that's awesome. Unfortunately you are in two gaming groups and the crap
you just described does not play games.

Yes they do: Install the rockbox firmware (strongly recommended, btw) on
any H1xx series iriver player and you have the ability to play gameboy
games (using the rockboy plugin).
