the PSP's too "fragile" for a kid. The game library's still too small, plus
not enough kiddies games. Plus most of the games are still too expensive...
for kids. Plus short-ish battery life - again not really suitable IMO for
kids...

You're better off getting a Gameboy Advance - larger library of games (most
of which IMO were designed for kids), and much cheaper and sturdier...

Cons: PSP is fragile; UMDs can be scratched and/or broken; Most PSP
games are for older gamers; Small hands might not be able to stretch to
reach all the controls; Game library is currently small (and
expensive); PSP's music and movie capabilities might be wasted on an 8
year-old; PSP is expensive

Pro: If you take a lot of car trips and don't mind shelling out
$15-$19 for a UMD movie, or can figure out how to rip a DVD to a memory
stick, the PSP is a nice little portable movie player; The clarity of
the graphics on that screen is amazing

I've got a 7 year-old daugher and a 9 year-old son. They both enjoy
gaming on the GameCube and sometimes the PS2. Neither one uses the
PSP...they just aren't interested. They do, however, enjoy the GBA:SP
(Kirby, Pokemon, Cartoon Network videos) and DS (Mario Kart,
Nintendogs, Animal Crossing). With cartridges that aren't as fragile,
and a lower price for both the games and the system, I think this might
be a better bet for your son.

I'd recommend getting a PSP anyway, and when your son doesn't seem to
enjoy it, apologize to the wife and get a DS instead...keeping the PSP
for yourself!

My son is 5 and he loves X-men II on my wife's PSP. Don't let him
touch mine. I disagree that it is too fragile for a kid. It is no
more fragile than the DS that Android suggested. If you know how to
rip movies, the program PSP video 9 will a sweet portable movie set up.
In terms of the games, there are plenty of games for an 8 year old.
Its funny how many childless people will think that the games are too
"old", for 8 year olds. 8 year olds are extremely smart when it comes
to games. I guess the 30-somethings are forgetting their Vic20 / NES
days.

Pros : It plays music and movies.

Cons: It's game offerings aren't diverse or are ports of games he might
already have.

I would second what Mark reccomended. Overall at that age I would go with
the GBA or the DS if you want to spend a little more...

Yet you won't let him touch yours?
If it wasn't fragile, why not let him bash yours?

If you MUST get a handheld, get a Game Boy Advance.

Cheaper, more kid-friendly games and the games are cheaper too.

PSP is more expensive and the games are almost as expensive as brand new
titles for the PS2! Plus, does your son really need a portable media
player?

What the hell does being fragile have to do with anything? My car isn't
fragile yet I don't let responsible people just use it whenever they want
because its mine. He can't touch mine because I am very conscious about
things like fingerprints and my wife doesn't really care one way or another.
She doesn't use it at home (only travel) so it goes unused a lot of the
time. I am always surfing the net in bed and playing web based Holdem' so I
like knowing that mine is fully charged. On top of that, he plays X-men
with ME and not my wife so it would be kind of hard for him to use mine.
Stop fishing for garbage.

You caught him in his twisted logic. What's even more twisted is that this
guy is supposedly a teacher
