Default Screen Size & Playability

Now don;t take this as an attack on specifically the PSP, it's towards all/most portable consoles

I recently (yesterday) had a go on a friend's brand new PSP. He also owns a DS but thinks it is rubbish compared to the PSP (and i would have to agree with him) BUT he lives for his new PSP, and wants to do everything on it...despite he has the latest computer hardware, 7.1 surround, TV mounted to his wall, and all the latest consoles. Also, note that all of this is only in his BEDROOM. yikes!

Although he may have a shiny new PSP with a 1Gb memory stick and a load of other addons (he has the full works), i feel almost no desire to get one. I just don't see the point! Maybe it is because I have a laptop, and so can play better games anywhere he can but when i was playing Burnout on it yesterday i had to admit that i was struggling to follow what was happening. The gameplay was smooth, sound was coming out of his 7.1 BUT i just couldn't follow what was happening! I know it sounds strange but i was winning my races not because of the clarity of the screen, but because the walls seemed to be made of sponge and bounced me off and back into the right direction!

When i tried "Crach" mode i barely caused a stir, taking out one unfortunate taxi, and when you compare this to an easy $41,000,000 on the PS2 version i have to ask myself, what's going on!

I used to have a Nintendo Gameboy and then my sister got a Gameboy colour, and within a week she had forgotten about it and so i had it. I used to be able to play Mario or Zelda for about 2 hours and even got a friend to complete a section of it for me on the ferry over to france during a school trip, and that was fine. I just don't think these new high definition and high action games are very well suited to a screen this small. It's good that it is portable, but is it too small for playing the latest fast-paced games?

What do you think?

Yes, way too small.
You have to strain your eyes to see, you cant see as much as you would on a TV and its just not as clear.

Theres no way you can play complicated games on PSP.

Pacman yes, Grand Theft Auto no.

I must say I never played in one. Actually the only one that I've seen (beside the ones on computer stores) was on an airplane. This guy was playing GTA like two seats in front and across for me: It looked great. Big screen, the graphics were ok (like you would see them on a 1ghz computer with an average card), smooth game play, but the colors seemed somehow off the GTA palete we all know. It might have been because of the angle, but I don't think so. When I was waiting for my luggage I stood right beside this guy and it still looked... Wrong?

I dont think its way too small.
It has to be small to be portable so they to draw a line between making it big and clearer, or smaller and portable.
I think they came to a good conclusion on its current size. The screen is extremely clear and I dont have a problem playing games for 2+ hours on it.

I must say i completely disagree. The psp has a larger screen than most things of that sort and i have no problem using it.
